Got this mixtape from Luegar, dude out of Tabi Bonney’s Organized Rhyme camp. If you can get beyond the DJ doing his best Khaled impression at the beginning (and did he record it in a cave? cheebus that echo.), the rest of the mixtape has a couple nice surprises, most notably the opening track, “Work” and my favorite cut, “Drugs” featuring Tabi Bonney. Expect to see more of Luegar, maybe on VH1 Soul & MTV Jams. Catch the “Weekend Girl” video after the jump (directed by Tabi) along with more bio info.

The New DC

Watch this in HD, this doesn’t do it justice.

Rapper, Luegar, was born in Harlem, NY. His formative years were spent moving up and down the East Coast with brief stints in Pittsburg, PA, Hartford, CT, and Tampa, FL before settling in Washington, DC. Along the way he picked up the love for music and hip-hop. Inspired by such artists as Kool G. Rap, Yukmouth, and Ice Cube he started writing rhymes of his own.

While the name Luegar may be new to some, this up and coming hip-hop artist is no rookie in the music game. He’s been on the scene since 1998, as half of the duo Vagabondz formed with fellow rapper Haziq Ali. The duo signed a series of deals, the final a multimillion dollar deal with Tommy Boy Records, but with the fickle music industry, nothing panned out. Soon thereafter, the pair formed Organized Rhyme with fellow rapper Tabi Bonney as a family of Washington, DC area independent artists. Determined to make it on their own terms, Organized Rhyme launched a series of underground CD’s and DVD’s making them not only popular in the DC area, but throughout the East Coast.

Luegar is now poised for a solo project with his mixtape “The New DC”, growing a huge buzz in the DC Metro Area. His single “Weekend Girl” is already a hit, gaining regular airplay on local radio stations WKYS and WPGC. The video for “Weekend Girl”, directed by Tabi Bonney, has the bloggers talking and saying that Luegar might be the next big thing out of DC. Luegar is now packing area clubs and commanding performances on the near weekly basis. Easily transiting from club bangers to hard tracks, with street lyrics and hypnotic hooks, Luegar has the kind of versatility that positions him to be at the forefront of the hip-hop game in DC and beyond for years to come.
